Ask SHED RAIN:
“How do I care for and maintain my umbrella?”

by Thomas McCracken

A little umbrella care and maintenance can go a long way in maximizing its usefulness and extending its lifespan. Proper maintenance ensures that your umbrella remains in great condition, ready to protect you, no matter the weather. Here are five ways to keep your SHED RAIN umbrella looking and operating its best.

How to dry an umbrella

After a rainy day, always leave your umbrella open to let it dry completely before putting it away for storage. Do not close an umbrella or put it in its case while wet, as this can lead to mold and mildew growth. For best results, hang it upside down or place it on a surface right-side up (resting on its handle and canopy edge) to allow for proper air circulation until dry.

How to properly store an umbrella

When not in use, store your umbrella in a cool, dry place, away from extreme heat or cold. Avoid storing it in damp areas and direct sunlight, as these elements can cause the fabric and frame to degrade faster over time. If you have a compact umbrella with a zippered case or a stick umbrella with a fabric sleeve, be sure to use them (once your umbrella is completely dry!) for added protection.

How to clean an umbrella canopy

To clean the fabric canopy of any SHED RAIN umbrella, simply wipe it down with a damp cloth or sponge. For stains, you may use mild soap and water—but avoid harsh chemicals or bleach, as these can damage the fabric. Always allow your umbrella to dry completely before storing.

How to check the frame and ribs of an umbrella

It’s a good idea to give your SHED RAIN umbrella a quick check every now and then—and especially after being out in particularly harsh weather—to make sure the ribs and frame are in good working order. Inspect each rib for bends or kinks, and each tip and joint for damage or breakage. Ensure that the canopy is free of holes and properly attached to each rib and tip. Confirm that the shaft is free of kinks or bends. Finally, open and close the umbrella a few times while watching closely for areas that maybe operating poorly, then take a closer look. If you notice any bent ribs or broken components, contact us right away. Under our lifetime warranty, we will repair or replace defective parts.

How to extend the life of an umbrella

While it’s true that no umbrella can last forever, there’s one simple rule you can follow to ensure you get the most out of your SHED RAIN umbrella. And it may seem obvious: Avoid extreme conditions. While our umbrellas are engineered to handle strong winds, with features like Vortex™ windproof technology, it’s best not to take your umbrella out in damaging winds, hail, or severe storms. If the weather is too harsh, consider postponing your outing until it calms down. We’d venture to say that’s good advice in general!
